@mcnado My dad was healthy when he caught the flu and it irreparably damaged his heart. He was on a transplant list for years after that, but did not survive. He did not see the age of 40 because of the flu.
This year will mark 30 years since his passing. I’m in my 40s now.
This is why I hate “it’s just the flu” and why I get vaccinated.
@bedast @czarbucks @mcnado I hate "it's just the flu," too. Sorry about your dad. I get my flu shot every year, too.
@bedast @mcnado
I am so sorry for your family's loss. My father and brother have asthma, so from the time I was a little kid I understood we get our flu shots every year because I might be okay but they could wind up in the hospital. I really don't understand how so many anti-vax adults in the US can fail to grasp what was clear to me as a four year old.
This.
Honestly, that was the lesson I took from the pandemic, the flu is also bad...
It's so frustrating how much people just want to ignore illness as an inevitable part of life...when we've so clearly demonstrated the ways in which we can minimize and limit the spread of diseases and all without seeing our lifestyle suffer.
I flew home from our holiday trip this Christmas and my whole family including my 5 year old little one wore a mask for the whole flight except for a short time to eat a meal. I was one of only a few people on the flight to do so. When I see other people in masks, sometimes I think, gee, they might be sick and doing the smart thing, maybe I should give extra space. But on the flight, of the dozens of people who were visibly sick and coughing, none of those people were wearing a mask. What does it take for us to do the pro-social, thing...the smart thing...and just wear a damn mask, at least when you're sick. Apparently it is a bridge too far for most people.
@bedast let’s make masking the new normal.
