beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Ben

Hello my name is Ben and I am a self-booster

There doesn't seem to be many of us around. Either that's because I am a disgusting monster or because others may not know how to do this (or a combination).

At the risk of telling people how to Mastodon.... if you're at all interested in searching either yours, or anyone else's (pending their settings) old posts you can do this by searching:

From:person keyword

For example...

From:me soup

This will then return all of your available previous posts mentioning soup.

Or if you want to search someone else's soup chat, you simply replace 'me' with their @:

From:@TheBreadmonkey soup

Further to this, you can add to the end:

Before:2023-09-30

From:@TheBreadmonkey soup before:2023-09-30

... and this will return all available results from that person before that date!

Happy souping, everybody!

@TheBreadmonkey How many days has it been since your last self-boost, friend? ;>)

@wendigo

I'm afraid we're talking minutes and hours rather than days and weeks

@TheBreadmonkey You aren't the only one, I noticed it is quieter here now. Bsky, perhaps?

@SnowshadowII

Who knows! Each to their own. Blueskyers gonna Bluesky I s'pose!

@TheBreadmonkey yup. I go there for a few minutes each day to check on Canadian politicians announcements and a few news sources from Europe, and to block the bots who follow but I am not a fan of the platform. It's like twitter....
My anxiety kicks in when there.

And the next time someone complains about spam/porn bots from dot social I'm going to tell them open an account on Bsky and they will afterwards be silenced! I waste so much damned time blocking them on --it's annoying!

@TheBreadmonkey Just to clarify, you may need to include the instance name if you’re searching for something from someone on a different instance from you, like this:

From:@ TheBreadmonkey@beige.party soup

And, when I ran this search, I was surprised by how often Ben toots about soup.

@mykl

It's a remarkable amount, right?

@TheBreadmonkey The #fedi is nothing less than amazing with You in it Brotha Ben.

Big up's

Brother

@TheBreadmonkey

I find the self boost to be a powerful getting to know you tool. When you first join and create your introduction it's shared with the ~3 people you know on your first day. Every once in a blue moon I'll re-boost so a whole slew of new people know what you're getting into!

The danger comes if you reboost more often than you write new material...then it gets repetitive (to be clear, that's not a problem you have soup man!)

@TheBreadmonkey fellow self-booster here. I don't see a single reason why you shouldn't boost yourself that wouldn't also imply you shouldn't post in the first place.

@TheBreadmonkey I am fine with people self boosting (and am aware of how to search for relevant posts) but don't feel the need to do it myself.

@TheBreadmonkey so this is a feature built specifically to search for soup? Seems weird but also useful. 🍜

@chris

FEDI HAS THOUGHT OF EVERYTHING

@TheBreadmonkey FYI -- not all instances allow searching (Kolektiva is one). I make good use of hashtags and I self-boost (and I don't think I'm a disgusting monster. A creature of the night, perhaps. But not a monster).

@TheBreadmonkey it turns out I have posted 3 times about soup.

All of those toots are incomprehensible now.

@TheBreadmonkey
Hello Ben! Welcome to Self-Boosters Anonymous. 😁

@TheBreadmonkey Mastodon should have a proper UI for this stuff, with dropdowns, etc, similar to Twitter's advanced search.

This query stuff using from:, before:, after: signals to the average user that they shouldn't bother using this very useful feature, because it's complex.

@TheBreadmonkey well this is insanely helpful, thank you

@TheBreadmonkey

Some more related #feditips !

1) Wanna find something that you reposted about soup (whether yours or someone else's?

in:library soup

2) Want to share a URL with every post that user @X tagged with #Y ?

UserXInstance.xxx/@X/tagged/y

Alas, Ben has zero posts tagged with soup 😭 , so here are all of my posts tagged with #humor

todon.eu/@dusk/tagged/humor

@dusk @TheBreadmonkey Wow! That’s genius! Thanks for sharing!

@TheBreadmonkey I usually schedule boosts of my toots from FediLab, so that the North American time zones get a glimpse of it.

@spacehobo

Oooh I can't schedule boosts. I'm not sure I should have that sort of power.

@TheBreadmonkey Thanks for sharing “how to mastodon”! Obviously you are a real master!
Enjoy your soup!

@TheBreadmonkey Very helpful and not at all complicated.

@TheBreadmonkey This doesn't seem to work for me on the desktop version of linernotes.club/. I've tried all the examples you've provided, getting no results at all. Perhaps the instance I use (linernotes.club) doesn't support it?

Mastodon hosted on linernotes.clubLiner Notes ClubThe premiere Fediverse destination for music lovers who nod knowingly at each other from across the room when that song comes on.

@mrowster

I'll be honest I'm not sure. I know that when I search some people I can see their whole history and when I search others I can only see interactions I've been included in. So it may have something to do with your settings rather than your instance. Perhaps @djsundog might be able to shed some light on it? 😊

@TheBreadmonkey it's OK, I self-boost occasionally! self-boosters anonymous (SBA)

@CatsWhoCode

I have severely failed at the anonymous part of this
