It is insane that men will write songs about literally sexually assaulting women, but if a woman chooses to dance provocatively in a sexy outfit, or write a song with sexually explicit lyrics, we have to have a whole discussion about whether that's okay.
@RickiTarr
Unfortunately, misogyny is baked into our society.
@PeteHall @RickiTarr well, maybe, could we get new recipe?
@Myoldpiano@mastodon.online @PeteHall@vmst.io @RickiTarr@beige.party
Already in the mixing bowl. You can dilute it, but probably always gonna be at least a bit of an aftertaste.
@RickiTarr My discussion is usually limited to “hmm but are they good live, I mean the divinyls were badass in concert all hail Chrissy Amphlett!”
@RickiTarr that's patriarchy for you.
@RickiTarr One of these two situations is just fine.
And it's not the song glorifying sexual assualt.
I've read two things that make sense to me (on an interpersonal level):
1) good sex (safe, desired, etc) is better for women generally and can last for a lot longer and achieve better peaks of performance (if you will.)
2) men can generally never be certain that any progeny are theirs (sans significant visual cues.)
1 leads to insecurity, envy and performative bragging
2 leads to patriarchal jealousy and rage
Both contribute to silencing women about sex and their sexuality
On a societal (read: economical) level, the third thing I've read/observed is that children are a material resource
Controlling the type and number of children born are a recurring theme in patriarchal systems. If women are enjoying sex, choosing their partners and having children as *they* wish to, the economic benefits of children won't be as easily assignable to the roles that rich people (men, generally) want.
Thus women must be shamed to not have sex except in approved ways
@swordplay Oh wow that's a great point
The general urge for conservatives to destroy families (separating children at border crossings, slavery, over-policing/injustice system, indigenous 'schools', for example) is related to this; these are 'unapproved' births and must be 'reassigned' to approved families or economic purposes.
@RickiTarr Seems like Leaving Las Vegas charted.
@maggiemaybe @RickiTarr Without consent, it's rape. I cannot think of anything less sexy than rape.
@maggiemaybe @RickiTarr I'll be honest, i find this whole conversation to be both true and depressing so I was planning on just hitting the star and moving on. Then I saw that awful slut shamy shit, and from an alleged woman no less, and decided not only to block her but to boost you both as well. Fuck that fucking shit to the moon and back. JFC are we sure this is 2023?
@RickiTarr Well if men are going to whine, why not go the whole way. I mean if they're gonna complain why not give them something to complain about, and even cross lines they cross in music.
@RickiTarr Wait, we're supposed to have a whole conversation about it? I thought "women exercising sexual agency of any kind whatever" made them bad, period.
@RickiTarr
Lightening Striking Again
@RickiTarr
Society is woefully pathetic at acting like adults.
@RickiTarr when Britney poledances on Instagram, it's "shocking" and "disturbing", but when a guy writes a song about how he has no idea how consent works, it's "provoking" and "boundary-breaking" huh
@amberage It drives me crazy. Remember all the articles about being so excited that the Olsen Twins were legal?
@RickiTarr before my time, but I can imagine. The same thing (well, on social media at least) happened a few years back when Billie Eilish turned 18
@amberage Oh man that's true, it's gross.
@RickiTarr yep, double standard alive and well
@RickiTarr Double Standard to the Max
“Lay Down Sally” lyrics have a distinctly creepy tone when heard today. Great tune, but…
