Should Sex Work be legalized?

Obviously, if you have more to say about it, comment below!

@RickiTarr 100% yes.

IMO, The reason it's illegal is that sex workers are/were primarily women. By criminalizing it hundreds of years ago, it severely lessened a woman's earning potential and pushed the narrative that women belonged to their men. It forced us to toe the line or be seen as moral degenerates.

We pay people to clean our houses, cut our grass, build stuff, etc. Sex work is just another way people use their bodies to make money. There should be no moral stigma attached to it.

I learned something from a Jack the Ripper doco recently. In the 1800s (and probably earlier), women of substance were constrained by binding corsetry inside their garments.

Poorer women could not afford the luxuries of corsets and bloomers, so they wore their dresses loose on their bodies.

This is how the term "loose" woman came into existence. Women were judged by their poverty and found both wanting and wanton.

Sex work should be legalised and governed by rules that protect women in their workplace.

thanks for this factoid - hope to use it in conversation one day 😉

perhaps only indirectly related, but possibly also interesting, speaking of ridiculous corsetry - this passage from The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith (1776)

(do i trust economic theories based on Smith’s powers of observation?)
