I really don't know how to keep saying this so cis people understand.
The Nazis in 1933 came for trans people. They burned our libraries to the ground. They raided and bombed our hospitals. They declared our existence illegal. And then they put us in concentration camps and gassed us.
The Nazis in 2025 came for trans people. They're burning our books. They're raiding and bombing our hospitals. They're declaring our existence illegal. And they're building concentration camps.
There's no fucking nuance here. There's no metaphor to be found. There's no allegory. There's no need to draw "similarities" between the Nazis then and the Nazis now, because it's the same people doing the same shit for the same reasons. It's not "similar". It's the same fucking thing.
And if you can't see that, if you've had blinders on for the last 92+ years, I just don't know how to fucking help you with that. If you think the Nazi attacks on trans people are somehow "recent", blame a Nazi, because Nazis are the reason you think that.

@Lana I don't think they want to acknowledge that the nazis tried the same thing, because then they would admit that it didn't/won't work.

When Hitler started ranting about the Jews from streetcorners in the 1920s, he was part
of a long history of European anti-Semitism.
But where in the world did this massive anti-trans campaign come from? | feel like it was invented out of whole cloth in the last five years.
@ Alejandra Caraballo @esqueer.net 22h
| need y'all to sit with this headline and understand what is being done to our community. They're trying to criminalize our very existence.
This is a campaign of eradication.

Texas bill would make identifying as transgender a felony punishable by jail
The bill, while unlikely to pass, highlights the increasing
extremism of legislation targeting trans people, especially in Texas, in recent years.

Raids and book burnings
Nazi Party members at the Opernplatz
book burning in Berlin On 6 May 1933, while Hirschfeld was in Ascona, Switzerland, the Deutsche Studentenschaft made an organised attack on the Institute of Sex Research, A brass band accompanied them as they arrived in the morning. After breaking into the building, the students destroyed much of what was inside, and looted tens of thousands of items — including works by authors who had been blacklisted in Nazi Germany. Following this, the leader of the students gave a speech before the institute, and the students sang Horst-Wessel-Lied Members of the Sturmabteilung (SA) appeared later in the day to continue looting the institute.
Four days later, the institute's remaining library and archives were publicly hauled out and burned in the streets of the Opernplatz by members of SA alongside the students. A bronze bust of Hirschfeld, taken from the institute, was placed on top of the bonfire. One estimate says that between 12,000 to 20,000 books and journals, and even larger number of images and sex subjects, were destroyed. Another estimate says that about 25,000 books were destroyed.
@Lana wait, they did cross the border from germany to switzerland to do their book burning? I had never known that detail :/
@gkrnours no, they waited until Dr Hirchfeld, the founder of the institute, was away and in Switzerland, and then attacked his clinic, which was located in Berlin.
@Lana oh, ok, I misread. Kinda make the nazi some cowards to wait for the old man to be out of town before ransacking his school
@gkrnours yeah. Nazis are cowards.
@Lana I'm cisgender and I completely agree with you. Those who *refuse* to see and understand the obvious are the Nazis.
@Lana Honestly, it’s frustrating. People can’t see what’s happening right in front of them. I’m genuinely terrified for the future of what’s to come. Thing is, I don’t think anyone is coming to save us from this. We have to save ourselves and that will probably be the hardest part.
I have been observing this from north of the border and find it horrifying. Are there any groups organizing underground railroads to Canada, should it come to that? What organizations can we tap into if we want to help?
@Lana
People don't know about this, though, because everyone *agreed* with that erasure. The gay people who were targeted in the Holocaust got some recognition at the end of the 20th century with the gay rights movement, but no one teaches about Hirschfeld in schools, almost no one in the mainstream knows that Berlin was the center of the world for queer and transgender people in the 1920s, no one knows about the Damenklubs and their complex gender dynamics, the passes that Hirschfeld issued, the way his research led directly to the pathologization in the DSM that lasted into the early 2000s. Dora Richter, Toni Ebel, and Gerda von Zobeltitz are not famous names like Anne Frank or Elie Wiesel. We should understand this not as a "return" to the acts of 1933 but as a continuation of a persistent, century-long erasure that has enabled this new wave to say things like "there was no such thing as transgender people until 5 years ago."
@Lana
I apologize if that came off rant-y, please take it as "extremely vehement and overly enthusiastic agreement."
@Lana I'd like to add the quote from Martin Niemöller:
https://www.azquotes.com/author/20566-Martin_Niemoller
@Lana I’ve been saying the same thing for no less than a decade. I’m louder now, not that screaming at a void changes anything.
@Lana if you are in America, don't be.
Scotland is lovely any time of year.
Scotland is taking the same steps as the US. They are going after self-ID. and one of the charity centers for women subjected to domestic violence stated that they will not accept Trans women anymore, and neither will they hire a trans woman.
I'm afraid countries that are accepting of Trans people are shrinking due to relentless media campaigns against us that shifted public opinion about us. Most people are not familiar with trans people, and what they know is what media feed them.
@Lana well said!
@Lana
I read a book recently about what Hitler and friends tried to do in WW2, where they started and what their goals were.
I didn't finish the book because it became quite apparent to me that history is repeating itself here and the reality we live in is disturbing now. I stopped reading at the point where the war was coming to an end and so many people had been murdered by the Nazis.
In school the details about the gay/trans/disabled people were embellished or omitted. I only recently learnt that Hitler targeted specifically not only the Jewish people, but very much gay, transgender, and particularly disabled people too. They even had a German word for disabled people.. I forget what it was, also don't want to remember it.
@Lana 'Those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it' is a misquote, but it is clearer than Santayana's saying.
That the victors write the history, in this case, is misleading. We have to go back to the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany, to understand what has been happening in this century.
And, yes, they attack the most marginalised first. The Trans, and First Nations....in the modern Nazi Movement.
@Lana THIS, ALL OF THIS!
@Lana My trans friends are living in mortal terror, and I'm furious on their behalf.
@Lana Note that back then, trans meant “transvestite”, but it certainly included what we now mean, when we say “trans”.
And yes, the Nazis came for everyone that didn't fit into their “normal”.
@forthy42 I'm sorry did you just mansplain my own history to me? Incorrectly?? LMAO
@Lana You were there 90 years ago?
@forthy42 you're actually kidding right? You're doubling down on mansplaining trans history to a trans person by attempting to discredit her based on the fact that she isn't 90+ years old? And you are?? LMAO Jesus fucking Christ dude.
@Lana So, in America today:
- Letting your unvaccinated child die of measles = parents' rights, but...
- Loving, supporting and validating your transgender child = abuse.
God bless America? Try, "God HELP America."
@Lana Transphobia will always be more politically useful than trans people. Modern history of Nazi Germany both-sides the rise of fascism through narratives of leftist provocateurs. The default liberal attitude is to treat trans people as among the understandable provocations that give rise to fascism because this approach allows them to manage things in a liberal way.
@Lana americans need to move past “they’re GOING TO do this, good heavens my pearls” and enter the “action” phase to prevent it entirely. The slower you do this, the more people are going to die.
